Good morning

It was all supposed to be sorted.

After late might talks it was expected that the DUP would, this morning,  nominate Paul Givan as new First Minister. That has now been thrown in doubt as MPs and House of Lords peers write to DUP leader imploring him to stall the nomination. DUP MLAs are currently in an emergency meeting at Stormont after Brandon Lewis, confirmed the government in London would impose Irish language legislation by the end of the year if the NI Executive fails to do so.

This is a fast moving story and we will keep you up to date via our website at www.newsletter.co.uk/  and on our live blog.

Gregory Campbell had previously warned that any decision to side-step Stormont by imposing an Irish language act via London risks more and bigger unionist protests – and ups the risk of renewed riots. He was adding his voice to a warning from colleague Sammy Wilson on the News Letter front page one day earlier.

Have a good day
