Good afternoon everyone

This week might have brought some good news in the battle against coronavirus, with the hospitality sector given an earlier than expected date to reopen, but the economic impact of the lockdown was laid bare on Tuesday.

New figures released showed that unemployment in Northern Ireland has more than doubled in the last two months. Newly released figures show that the number claiming the benefit in May was 65,200, representing 7% of the total workforce. It has undoubtedly been a very tough period for many businesses but hopefully the weeks to come will bring the shoots of economic recovery.

First Minister Arlene Foster also revealed that she will be proposing the extension of free school meal support to the Province's pupils over the summer holidays.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health revealed that one more person with coronavirus in the Province has passed away.

This brings the total number of deaths here of people with Covid-19 up to 542.  While it is very sad to hear about anyone losing their life, the downward trend of deaths and new cases continues. Just two more people have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

Please take care
