Dear reader
,

May might have been another tough month of lockdown in Northern Ireland, but as measures were gradually eased, many of us did get to enjoy the outdoors and the glorious weather we experienced through the month.

I'm sure, like me, that many of you can't remember such a sustained run of sunshine through both April and May. It certainly made a couple of difficult months for all of us more bearable. It's been especially beneficial for my family, we have a couple of young boys who loved the sunshine when they have been taking a break from homeschooling.

Sod's law, as I write this note, the weather seems to be on the turn, with the weekend forecast for plunging temperatures and some rain. Let's hope it's just a temporary downturn!

If the weather lifted spirits it was still a difficult month for many people across Northern Ireland, not least for the family involved in the dreadful tragedy in Ballycastle, where a young mother and her daughter died in an accident yards from their home.

There were other tragedies too, with farmer Andrew Abraham, a father-of-four from my home village of Waringstown in Co Down, losing his life in an accident on his family farm in Co Antrim.

The month did bring moments of light relief too, not least provided by a Catholic priest who inadvertently played the Sash following a service that was being streamed online.

There were moments of happiness that brought tears to the eye as well. While weddings have been banned during the lockdown, Stormont made alterations to allow a terminally ill woman to marry her partner in a small ceremony at home. It was a lovely moment for Samantha Gamble and Frankie Byrne in Co Down.

As I wrote in my previous monthly notes, I'm proud of the manner in which my team has adapted to different ways of working. All of us have been working away from our offices now since lockdown was introduced in late March, but I believe we have continued to provide you with comprehensive coverage of not only the coronavirus pandemic, but also the issues that matter to each and every one of you.

While lockdown has brought many challenges for our business in terms of newspaper sales and advertising revenues, more people than ever are reading our material online. Many thanks to all of you who supported us by taking a subscription, your support is vital as we maintain the News Letter's proud tradition of reporting the news accurately and fairly.

As the lockdown has been lifted, people are getting out and about more, but it is still an enormously difficult climate for our advertisers. We wish them every success as they try to reopen their businesses over the summer.

We just hope and pray that the path back to normality continues in the weeks and months ahead, and perhaps many of you will be able to enjoy a summer holiday of some kind.

If you have any questions or issues in relation to our content or subscriptions, don't hesitate to contact me on alistair.bushe@newsletter.co.uk

Once again, many thanks for your continuing support.

Stay safe
