The weather has been so stunning that this might end up the sunniest spring ever. Yesterday was the beginning of the rain - I never thought I would welcome damp conditions in NI, but I almost do ... This is an extraordinary story on our front page today, about a former PSNI officer who alleged that he suffered overt anti Catholic sectarian abuse, claims that left his colleagues devastated, yet now has retracted it entirely (within that report is a link to the full confession). That story is on the front page of our weekend News Letter and Farming Life print edition, which is in the shops tomorrow (Sunday) as well as today. Also in that print edition, if you prefer to see it laid out over two pages, is the names of all the people who died in the 1941 Belfast Blitz. The nearly 1,000 names are online here. The Gerry Adams trial is almost over. On Wednesday the former Irish attorney general gave scathing evidence against the former Sinn Fein leader. Here is Prof Liam Kennedy on an Irish poet who expressed revulsion about the IRA. Meanwhile, the ever confident Kneecap are mocking their critics and playing to huge crowds. This letter accuses Alliance of joining nationalists to breach the spirit of a Belfast Agreement they often cite to endorse voting rights in Northern Ireland for Irish presidential elections. My column is on how lucky Ireland is not to get a Trump-style lecture from UK leaders. As I write this tens of thousands of people are in Ballymoney, marking 25 years since the death of Joey Dunlop. We will have more reports online and in Monday's paper. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and your reading. Ben |
