The Balmoral Show (here are pictures of it) has probably had some of the very best weather in its history. That sounds like hyperbole but it has been perfect for four days - warm and sunny. I write this from the show late on Saturday morning and it is another fabulous day. There is a video in this article showing how warm and almost dusty it was in the evening. An equestrian journalist Bree Rutledge said to me how being in the RUAS pavilion, watching showjumping in the main arena, was like the south of France. I thought it was like California! The video in my column, which is about how big and interesting the show has become, conveys the ringside view from the pavilion. This video was taken from the pavilion and shows a young showjumping expert from Dublin Alex Lyons commentating on one performance. Water levels in Northern Ireland are pretty much never too low. I remember as a young reporter checking them during a heatwave, perhaps 2003, and reservoirs were fine. But now there is a warning about water. There was lots of politics at the show, with unionist politicians accusing the agriculture minister of 'draconian' measures to combat pollution. We have lots more about Balmoral on the website and in print, and in Farming Life. One other story I will mention: the damning criticism of the chief constable in this essay by a former PSNI head of discipline Jon Burrows, for failing to defend his officers against claims of sectarianism that seemed to be dropped. Enjoy your reading and your weekend, Ben |
