Dear reader

Edwin Poots, the Stormont Agriculture Minister, is currently the bookmakers' favourite to become the next leader of the DUP.

A day after Arlene Foster signalled her intention to stand down as party leader at the end of May, Mr Poots seems to be the most fancied successor with odds of 8/11.

Sir Jeffrey Donaldson is second favourite at 5/4 with Gavin Robinson, the East Belfast MP, at 11/1. The odds on the South Belfast MLA Christopher Stalford have been slashed by the bookmakers on Thursday, and he is now placed at 12/1.

We have put together an article outlining the possible contenders for the leadership which you can read here

In an interesting intervention, a former MLA, David McIlveen, has warned the DUP leaders that they will need to change more than the leader if they want to change the direction of the party.

Writing for the News Letter, Mr McIlveen says the party needs to "clear out the decks from the party's back office" and ensure that unelected advisers have less influence over big decisions in the future.

Don't miss Friday's News Letter print edition, when we report on the latest developments in the DUP leadership race, and we get former leader Peter Robinson's insight into a dramatic week.
