We are under a blanket of cloud a BBC NI weather presenter said this week. But even so there are uplifting things happening like the visit of William and Kate today.

And last night I was at Windsor Park for the first time in many years. I was impressed at the number of times the plucky Northern Ireland players got near the goal of a mighty footballing nation such as Germany.

Saturday was the Ulster Unionist Party conference where Mike Nesbitt said that English nationalism is a greater threat to the Union than republicanism. English nationalism is indeed a risk, but at times unionism almost helps to propel such thinking.

Mike Nesbitt has said that, re the attack on Irish language signage, that republicans wrote the manual on vandalising signs. I feel that the Irish language policy in Belfast is panning out in just the divisive way I predicted it would a couple of years ago.

Last week I was at the Tory conference, which was not as dead as reported. While there is a shift to the right even on Northern Ireland policy, Owen Polley says the party won't be convincing on NI until it rejects the Irish Sea border.

Meanwhile, it is interesting that the government is now planning to legislate to stop Gerry Adams and others get compensation. There are, even so, real fears about Labour's joint legacy plans with Ireland, which Jeff Dudgeon and others highlighted in this debate.

Enjoy your reading,

Ben
