The first day since the spring that I felt a real chill this autumn was October 10, then again some days this week. A royal visit to Northern Ireland by the heir to the throne, Prince William with his wife, the Princess of Wales, came days before by the brother of the king, Prince Andrew, giving up his Duke of York title last evening. The Northern Ireland motorcycle racing star Jonathan Rea was lucky to avoid serious injury in a crash in Spain today, on the weekend he retires. Years ago I attended a service in May Street Presbyterian in central Belfast, one of Northern Ireland's many fine church buildings, and it was sparsely attended and it had roof and other challenges. It is good to see it now has a thriving congregation. Here is a sadder Christian story, about violence in Nigeria. I mentioned in my last mail being at Windsor Park on Monday. There was a protest at Olympia leisure centre next door last night about Irish signage. Here is my own column on the double standards around Irish signage. This afternoon I was at a legacy seminar in Queen's University arranged by Padraig Yeates, who writes here on his concerns about the new UK-Irish plan for dealing with the past. Here I challenge Ireland's claim to be acting on behalf of unionists on legacy. Enjoy your reading and your weekend, Ben |
