As of 3.46am this morning, the days have been getting shorter, usually a melancholic moment for me. But this fine weather dispels any gloom. It is extraordinarily hot, yesterday almost 30 Celsius in Northern Ireland, a level the province usually does not hit all summer. It is good weather for Armed Forces Day in Newtownards, about which we will carry reports and pictures later. There was less violence this week, thank goodness, but trouble in the Northwest was a reminder that there has been longstanding, vicious violence up there - and not always dealt with robustly by the authorities. Christian leaders have described as a dark day the assisted dying vote in Westminster, but in my column I argue that non Christians too should be worried about both assisted suicide (as it should be called) and the extreme abortion liberalisation. The DUP has intermittently argued for the 'best of both worlds' re the Irish Sea border but Sammy Wilson here denies that he was doing such in a tweet he put out after meeting the Indian high commissioner. Finally, I never made it to Slane but remember as a boy the excitement of so much as reading about those fabulous rock and pop concerts in the 1980s. Here three of our journalists remember attending performances in that fine setting made possible by the sadly now deceased Lord (Henry) Mount Charles. Enjoy your weekend and your reading, Ben |
