The beginning of June

It is a mild, dull day in Belfast but the start of summer, June 1. Some people say summer starts on the solstice, later this month, but for me it begins at some point in the glorious month of May and has already arrived, regardless of the day-to-day variations in weather.

We are days from the 80th anniversary of D Day. A historian believes interest in that event is greater than ever.

It has taken more than three years for two PSNI officers finally to be cleared for their handling of a covid breach on the Ormeau Road. We say that the bodycam footage they took should be made public.

On the week that the TUV revealed its election candidates including a former DUP director of policy, the DUP was said to be pivoting against its Stormont deal. There is not much sign of that in Gavin Robinson's essay for us today.

It all reminds me of my view that the party made two key mistakes when it returned to Stormont.

Meanwhile Pat Cullen has moved from Royal College of Nursing head to Sinn Fein candidates. She declined to answer questions about her view on IRA terrorism. This letter writer wonders why the "sycophantic" media has not grilled Ms Cullen on that point.

In America Donald Trump has been convicted. A DUP MP who once held a pro Trump banner thinks the charges were political. I am not a fan and consider the US election to be an unfolding nightmare.

Meanwhile, our biking expert Kyle White as ever is in the Isle of Man for the TT.

Enjoy your reading and your Saturday,

Ben
