Dear reader,
It is a strange term Black Friday. It originates in America, where it was a big shopping day because so many people were off work after the huge holiday Thanksgiving the day before. We don't have such a holiday in the UK but now use Black Friday anyway. It conjures up bad weather, and seemed apt yesterday, given the darkness and miserable conditions in Northern Ireland, including a man being killed tragically by a tree In other festive news, Belfast's Christmas market is back The serious stories of the day have not gone away. Among our many reports on the Northern Ireland Protocol, one of the most recent is the negative unionist reaction to Dr John Kyle of the PUP calling for unionists to see the upsides to the Irish Sea border On Tuesday I was on GB News the same day that Louise Haigh contradicted her Labour Party leader Keir Starmer by saying she would not argue for NI staying in the UK in a border poll (he had said they would) Today we lead the paper with the partial u-turn on vaccine passports, which will now at first only apply to licensed premises. Our Covid coverage is in this section During the week, Mark Rainey produced a two-page spread on the 1993 Northern Ireland-Republic of Ireland match at Windsor Park, and he challenged claims that there was widespread sectarian chanting by NI fans Today Owen Polley, who was also at the game as a teenager, agrees that the claims of vicious abuse are a myth Also in our bumper weekend News Letter, as always filled with a range of other stories including an interview with Carl Frampton, is an extract from the pro Union book I mentioned last week. Lord Trimble says that the key element of the 1998 Belfast Agreement he helped negotiate has been demolished There is too much else to mention without this mail going on forever. A couple of last mentions. The News Letter weekend print edition with Farming Life is in the shops until tomorrow. Thank you for your continued interest in The News Letter, our long established title. If we can interest you, there's huge value in a subscription to The News Letter, through which you can secure unfettered access to our news, sport, opinion and lifestyle journalism, all produced for you here by our team across Northern Ireland.
We hope you have a good weekend.
Best wishes, Ben Lowry Editor, The News Letter |
