Good afternoon

Welcome to your afternoon update from the News Letter.

It has been a glorious Bank Holiday Monday with many individuals and families taking to the beach and country parks to enjoy the sunshine. Our cameras have been out catching up with the visitors as good weather finally arrived.

In Coronavirus news another 39 people have tested positive with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the latest Department of Health dashboard has revealed. This is the lowest number of positive tests recorded since August 2020. No deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19 were recorded in the last 24 hours.

Worryingly this news comes as it emerges there are signs the UK is in the early stages of a third wave of coronavirus infections. A scientist advising the government has said. Prof Ravi Gupta, from the University of Cambridge, said although new cases were "relatively low" the Indian variant had fuelled "exponential growth".

The new leader of the Ulster Unionist Party has urged the DUP and Sinn Fein to keep the "show on the road" in terms of the powersharing government in Northern Ireland. Days ahead of DUP leader Edwin Poots' expected unveiling of his new ministerial team, and amid speculation over whether Sinn Fein will support the nomination of new ministers without a commitment over Irish language legislation, Doug Beattie said the Executive "has to last".

You can keep up to date with all the politics news from Sam McBride and the News letter team as Edwin Poots continues to set out his stall as DUP leader.

* Alex Kane: Opportunities for the UUP, but dangers as well.
As the UUP is about to discover, sudden and unexpected opportunities can be a mixed blessing for a political party with a new leader who seems to be making the right kind of waves.

Have a good evening
