Dear reader

A primary four pupil at a school in Northern Ireland has tested positive for COVID-19, it emerged on Tuesday.

In a letter to parents which was posted on the school's website, the principal of St. Mary's Primary School, Banbridge, Mr Des O'Hagan said all the students in the class must now enter into quarantine for 14 days before they can return to school.

Mr O'Hagan said all pupils in the P4 class can return on September 25.

The news emerged as the education minister, Peter Weir, said the education department will not take a punitive approach to parents who do not send children to school over coronavirus fears. The minister added that the number of parents here who had decided to hold back their children was "fairly minimal".

The economic cost of Covid-19 was laid bare once again on Tuesday. First the latest data shows that one in 10 young people here is now unemployed. The number of people overall claiming unemployment-related benefits rose by 800 to 62,700 in August.

In addition, Translink confirmed it was making £20m budget costs as part of cost savings necessary because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Ulsterbus Tours will be cut as part of the exercise.

Another death related to Covid-19 in Northern Ireland was confirmed, with another 79 positive cases recorded in the last 24 hours
