I write this under grey skies after one of the sunniest spells in Northern Ireland ever. It has been sunny almost non stop for a fortnight, which is exceptional as I explain in my column here. It has a video I took from Stormont this morning, discussing how unusual it is. Here are sunny pictures from each of the days this month, almost all of which saw 12+ hours of sunshine at a point in the calendar when there is only about 13 hours of daylight. It was in stunning weather on Tuesday that I attended the funeral of Ronnie Appleton, the Troubles prosecutor who has died at 97, at the Jewish cemetery in Carnmoney. Here a former judge says he did not get the recognition he deserved. I agree and will write about that again. Helen McGurk here interviews a Northern Ireland man who painted King Charles over several sittings. In politics, Emma Little-Pengelly who has taken a very diplomatic approach to being deputy first minister is unusually blunt here when explains here why she opposes the duplication of Stormont having a climate change commissioner. Finally, Reg Empey here defends the Belfast Agreement. And a former Ulster Unionist colleague of his Jeremy Burchill is scathing about the proliferation of Irish language signage. Enjoy your weekend even though there will be less sun, and your reading. Ben |
