It was grey this week, and this morning, perhaps penance for the sunshine the week before ... Our political editor David Thompson was at a reception at Buckingham Palace for regional journalists a mere 24 hours before the king was admitted to hospital, and writes here that he seemed in fine form. On Monday, we ran Jeff Dudgeon's excellent 3,000 word critique of the Clonoe inquest verdict against the SAS for killing four IRA men. In my own column I say that ruling caused even this Labour government to snap on legacy, but they have been weak about Ireland hypocritically suing the UK on the past. This is a poignant, hand-written letter that was sent to the News Letter by an elderly woman who says she suffered years of domestic verbal abuse. The Royal Hotel in Bangor is being demolished. I feel sadness about that partly because while I grew up in Bangor and am long familiar with the hotel, for some reason I never set foot inside, and would love to know what it was like. It is Mother's Day tomorrow, which makes me think of my late mum. Jackie McGregor does the same in this column, 20 years after her mother died. Enjoy that day, and your weekend reading, Ben |
