The run-up to this week's spring equinox was 10 largely sunny days, with Thursday almost the hottest day of the year in Northern Ireland at 17.1 Celsius. OK, it is not going to be so nice in the coming days but I write here about why I think that does not matter at this point in the season. This letter writer makes an interesting observation about how unionists of today seek to talk up the Scots Irish (ie northern Protestants) men who played a key part in the fledgling United States, yet rarely ever mention the British loyalists of Ulster extraction who fought for the crown in America. This letter by Dr Geoffrey Todd is very important because he is a sober critic of lockdown, as opposed to a conspiracy theorist. He is a consultant respiratory physician - in other words he is highly qualified to talk about the covid risks compared to the risks of lockdown. Two further letters worth a mention, that defend Enoch Burke, the teacher jailed in the aftermath of a row for his refusal to use trans terminology, and his and his family's 'appropriately Christian' protests in America. In his latest 'Letter from America', Phelim McAleer writes about the "appalling" record of the US secret service. The Heathrow fire has caused me to revisit my idea that both London and Northern Ireland need a new hub airport. I remember the first time I went to Connswater shopping centre in the early 1980s, it seemed modern and cool and perhaps a sign of the revitalising of that Bloomfield area. How sad that it has shut. This story about catastrophic injuries caused to a child is so appalling that I almost did not include it in this message but felt it needed to be recorded. Finally, the Northern Ireland coach Michael O'Neill is full of praise for Isaac Price, who scored in the draw against Switzerland last evening. Enjoy your reading and your Saturday, Ben |
