Hello and welcome to my weekly letter from the editor, After mild weather in Northern Ireland, then cold, sunny, calm days, now we have another storm. This one has done much more damage than most and a ferry is stuck in the Irish Sea. Talking of the Irish Sea, a crunch moment for the DUP is upon us. We understand that Sir Jeffrey Donaldson believes he can secure support for a return to Stormont. We will soon find out if the DUP divisions can be repaired, I write here. Look at the range of unionist views. Here is the Orange Order being criticised by Jim Allister. And here is Doug Beattie, who supports return, on why this is a test of leadership and Kate Hoey, an opponent, on why the deal must be published. Owen Polley says the worst thing would be to hail a bad deal for unionists as a good one. On Saturday I reported on an uplifting remembrance service for victims of terror. There was a sombre yet hopeful mood at the Royal Irish Regiment band concert and memorial event at Aughnacloy College, and the relatives of the four men men murdered by the IRA, all connected to the school, told me they were very pleased with the event. The occasion was arranged because it is 50 years since Captain Cormac McCabe, former head of what was then Aughnacloy Secondary, was abducted over dinner with his family at a hotel in Monagahan then shot dead. In my last newsletter I included my article on what I think is a media/political failure to cover arguments against the general strike. On the day of the strike I clashed with William Crawley about this on BBC Talkback and he read out some messages from listeners who agreed with me. Here is a letter from someone who does too and here is a message from a small businessman who talks about the disadvantage such employers are at compared to public sector. This burger bar apologised after saying the strikers should try being self employed. Rory has won the Dubai classic! Wonderful! And, finally, Helen McGurk interviews Hastings Hotels' James McGinn who talks llamas, silk ties and meeting royalty. That's all for now. Thanks for reading the News Letter and my newsletter too! See you soon, Ben Lowry |
