It was the meteorological first day of winter yesterday, and chilly both in Blackpool where I was for a work event and now back in Belfast

Yet despite increased demand for heating, oil prices in Northern Ireland are at their lowest since the summer (albeit still 20% higher than that time)

It is advent, and tomorrow what I consider to be one of the best services to mark the season is traditionally held at St George's in central Belfast. This year they are also raising funds to restore their 160-year-old church organ.

And here is Sandra Chapman on why Christmas still matters  Also, the hilarious May McFettridge is back!

Politics grinds on and speculation of a pre Christmas deal seems to have subsided. David Hoey here writes about how the DUP should consider opposition if Stormont returns

Also in opinion, here is the excellent Cillian McGrattan on how nationalist Ireland is succumbing to Vichy syndrome.  My column is also on legacy, how while London would snub Greece it would not dare Ireland even when the latter, incredibly, is threatening to sue it on UK handling of the past

The Abu-Dhabi backed bid for the Daily Telegraph is being examined by government. Here we explain why, after almost 300 years at the forefront of press freedom, we at the News Letter think that bid should be blocked

In another editorial we said it was not the media's role to play down the reasons for the (deplorable) Dublin riots.

Talking of immigration, our excellent reporter Adam Kula, who in Blackpool won our company-wide award (which includes papers like the Scotsman and Yorkshire Post) for best journalistic handling of data, on how Belfast is taking more asylum seekers per head of population than most of rest of UK
