Thursday was the worst July day I remember in years. I began the day in Donegal, where I had been away for a few days, in rain and ended it in Belfast, where at 10pm it was still daylight but also still windy and wet.

Today is delightful in Belfast but I see at lunchtime some rain in the west. I hope Donegal Orangemen escape that and I hope that there is good weather in Belfast on Wednesday if that magnificent winding parade proves to be the last long one

Tomorrow is 25 years since the Drumcree parade was fully and permanently blocked

I was thinking of eagles in Donegal, when I was near to Glenveagh Park, which has them. How sad to return to read of this find of a poisoned eagle in Ballymena, which had been released hundreds of miles away by Micheal Martin

Last week one of only four daily papers in the world that are older than us, a German one, ceased daily publication. We are still the oldest English language daily on earth. Here I recap in detail on our historical record

Meanwhile, a wonderful send off for an Ulsterman teacher who spent 23 years in a New Zealand school that was founded by an Ulsterman
