| It was an almost perfect sunny day in Belfast yesterday, which is always uplifting at this darkest point in the calendar. Last week I wrote about the seasonal flu. Meanwhile there is the seasonal crises in our emergency departments. Accidents are particularly tragic in the festive season and what strikes me about these two separate fires yesterday is that both happened in daytime, and both led to the deaths adults of working age - a reminder of the great peril of fire. In happier news, the Northern Ireland husband and wife gospel singer-songwriters Keith and Kristyn Getty are putting on three UK Christmas concerts. In opinion pieces, here is Prof Liam Kennedy on President Catherine Connolly, whose elevation of Irish head of state was noticed in a critical article in the Wall Street Journal. And here are articles on legacy: Eoghan Harris on a former Irish minister for justice, who hated the IRA, Jeff Dudgeon is scathing about underhand Westminster weakness around Gerry Adams, Rev David Clements remembers his murdered father, and I ask Jon Boutcher why he is making highly political comments about how to handle the past. Finally, a former Church of Ireland bishop is making a Christmas humanitarian appeal for Congo. Enjoy your reading and your weekend, Ben |
