It was grey last weekend, beautiful during the week, now wet today. The Ulster Superbike Championships in Bishopscourt have been affected by the rain. Weather comes and goes but last week we celebrated our endurance - our 288th birthday. On that date I watched Donald Trump, Sir Keir Starmer and King Charles at Windsor and realised we have reported on all 114 men and women who have been British monarch, UK prime minister or US president since September 1737 (which is all incumbents ever of the latter two posts). Today is 200th anniversary of the first ever train trip. I write here about my love of rail and how in little more than a decade trains had reached Ulster, where they are currently popular (having nearly been shut 25 years ago). Unionists seem unconcerned that their opposition to digital IDs might be seized on by Labour to say again that Stormont unanimity against it means Northern Ireland must be carved out from rest of UK on a key matter. And are IDs so bad? I warned against unionists saying "all the main parties oppose the Legacy Act" without making clear that they have no shared position with nationalists on legacy. Sure enough, days ago Labour cited that 'shared' stance to justify appeasing an Irish government that is suing it. In the video with my column neither Hilary Benn nor Simon Harris challenge my query to them about Irish hypocrisy on amnesties. Talking of Irish Sea borders, Gavin Robinson last week expressed regret at how the DUP sold their deal on that last year. Finally, our interview is with an ex Lurgan College boy who is now head of the RAF. Enjoy your weekend, and your reading, Ben |
