We have gone from a heatwave to days in which I felt almost chilly. But the forecast is good for the rest of this bank holiday weekend, yet there is advice against swimming at the popular Benone beach on the north coast. The sad news of Rev Martin Smyth dying broke last night just after we went to press. My grandparents lived in South Belfast so I remember well that constituency from the early days of his representation, after his predecessor, Rev Robert Bradford, was murdered in 1981 by those who silence their critics. It has gone from being ultra safe unionist to nationalist. I think of a photograph, which I perhaps still have somewhere, of Rev Smyth standing with my late dad, who was a doctor, in a line-up to meet Princess Margaret at the opening of Belfast City Hospital. News of a driverless bus trial in Belfast Titanic Quarter recently reminded me of my experience of travelling in a driverless taxi in Phoenix Arizona last November. My video and description of that thrilling experience is here. The sooner such vehicles come to NI the better. Recently, my weight reached such a hefty level that I was actually surprised at the scales, and I felt forced into the first diet of my life. I should have commenced it years ago, but as Jackie McGregor writes, it was always something for tomorrow. Lastly, Drew Harris has served policing with distinction on both sides of the border. It is to the credit of the increasingly green Irish establishment that it appointed as chief police officer a man who had such long service in that fine, but demonised, force the RUC.
