I write this in a patch of sunshine after days of mediocre weather, and now we are into what I consider to be the autumnal month of August. There might be a bit of an unseasonable storm on Monday.

Our lead story today is the tragic death of Guy McFadden-Newman after a short illness, months after his wife Kerry, who had a sudden illness. The popular couple from Portrush leave three children.

Northern Ireland does not have anything like as much tree cover as much of Europe, so I think it is worrying to hear of planning decisions such as this one, allowing houses in protected woodland in Netownards.

Today we run a 3,000 word essay by our columnist Owen Polley on how it was not only nonsense to say the Irish Sea border had been in any way removed last year, the frontier is getting harder.

In opinion essays, I welcome the selection of the ex PSNI officer Jon Burows as an Ulster Unionist MLA, and Dr William Kitchen writes that it is more important that a school is of very high quality than it is integrated.

We have been covering the SuperCup, and it is striking to hear a footballing giant like Wayne Rooney speak so warmly about the event, watching his son play.

Enjoy your weekend and your reading,

Ben
