It is a beautiful autumnal sunny morning in Belfast, of the sort that makes you optimistic about the world.

We need such optimism after a terrible week in the Middle East. As I wrote to you last Saturday morning, there were no details on the Hamas attack, but we now know young people at a dance in southern Israel were still at that time hiding and trying to avoid being massacred

It might seem strange to wonder if Sinn Fein not condemning Hamas by name after such a murderous assault on Jewish civilians would be an obstacle to the return of Stormont given that DUP has shared power with a former IRA leader but it did seem to me to show an unbreachable divide between those parties

Here is video footage of pro Palestinians in Londonderry chanting from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free and here is a letter from Dublin saying if Israel surrenders to Hamas it will be slaughtered

We will be covering this story closely in the coming days including the pro Israel vigil in Belfast later this Sunday afternoon.

Sport and politics were entwined this week with the former UK sports minister Kate Hoey writing for us about why she opposes the Casement Gaelic stadium funding and this writer saying unionists should rethink support for the Ireland rugby team

I was at the DUP conference yesterday where Sir Jeffrey Donaldson said Stormont is important for the Union

There will be more in Monday's paper but for now here is a video clip where I asked Sir Jeffrey if that meant Stormont was coming back.
