On the brink of October, it was gloriously sunny much of yesterday, the two days prior were atrocious  Here Sandra Chapman remembers a storm

Tomorrow there will be metaphorical storms in the Irish Sea when the trade border becomes the most forceful it has yet been. But Chris Heaton-Harris explains to us why he thinks it is an improvement on the protocol It has taken years of twists to get to this point

But in this article for us on the eve of the barrier, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson says the DUP will not be bullied back to Stormont, yet he seems not to close the door on such

Again Esmond Birnie challenges claims about the alleged economic boost NI has had from the protocol

Here Reg Empey says that unionists who backed Nigel Farage have been betrayed by his comments on a united Ireland

Also this week, much of the Gillen recommendations on sex trials became law

We reported in 2019 the concerns legal experts had about parts of the plan including Joshua Rozenberg, the leading QC Chris Daw,  and the top judge Sir Richard Henriques, who had written a report into the dangers of always believing claimants as in Operation Midland

Now, incredibly, as Jim Allister KC, who opposed the law, and the Society of Editors explain, it will not in NI be possible to name people such as Jimmy Savile, even after death, if they are charged for sex offences but not convicted

Police tomorrow will warn pro life marchers about new abortion protest limits, caused by another badly devised Stormont law

Shortly after the sheep dog trials, a well known handler has died, William Barfoot

🔴 From the News Letter today

New Gillen restrictions on sex trial reporting in Northern Ireland would have protected Jimmy Savile and are an affront to justice, say editors. New anonymity laws for sexual offences cases in Northern Ireland would have prevented reporting of allegations against Jimmy Savile in the province, the Society of Editors has warned

Key essence of unionism is equal citizenship - not Stormont: Jim Allister. The key essence of unionism remains equal citizenship for all – not a devolved administration at Stormont, Jim Allister has told a rally in Co Armagh.

Report finds Covid-19 outbreaks in two NI hospitals were 'catastrophic'. The impact of Covid-19 outbreaks at two Northern Ireland hospitals was "catastrophic", a report has found.

📰 Opinion

Editorial: Grammar school system lets Northern Ireland sidestep the VAT private school fees row in England. A major political row about education is brewing on the mainland, and is set to last until next year's general election and beyond

Esmond Birnie: Claim that NI could become the UK and Europe's Hong Kong is hard to square with the data. Sunday is October 1, when the Windsor Framework provisions relating to Great Britain to Northern Ireland trade in goods commence.
