| It was grey and chilly on Saturday afternoon, but scores of Iranians protested in Belfast city centre against the theocratic regime in Tehran. I took the short video of them in this story. America's foreign minister, Marco Rubio in Germany, paid a fine tribute to the Ulster folk who helped shape America yet for some reason barely a word of his was reported by the Northern Ireland media, outside of this report in our newspaper. This is a fascinating, long essay from Dean Godson, former editorial writer at the Daily Telegraph on the 1996 Canary Wharf bomb. He was working on the paper nearby and was lifted off his seat by the blast. He asks if the IRA benefitted from the attack, in which two newsagents were killed, despite a Conservative government being in power. On Saturday, the News Letter revealed the Ulster Unionist health minister's suspension of the puberty blockers child trial. My column on Saturday was in defence of Jim Ratcliffe's remarks on immigration and benefits, and I also congratulated the first baby boomers on turning 80. Last week the economy minister Caoimhe Archibald belatedly replied to two distinguished economists who challenged apparent 'deception' in her use of statistics. Enjoy your start to the week, and your reading, Ben |
