It has been a mostly pleasant summer weekend but overnight early on Wednesday Co Down was the coldest place in the entire UK, dropping to 3.9 Celsius - not so far above freezing and a reminder that autumn is near and why I don't like August.

I wrote last month about how in July you don't need to worry about turning on the heat. At those temperatures, you do. Good news however for homeowners who have oil-fired heating (which is still most of Northern Ireland) - oil prices have dipped almost as low as last summer

Our Olympians have been getting big crowds honouring them in their home towns, which is a joy to see.  Why, though, is there still no Northern Ireland homecoming? As Trevor Ringland says, if the government is not going to organise it the private sector should.

I write here about how Mary Peters had an open top tour in Belfast in 1972 despite the fact that it was almost the most violent point of the most violent year of the Troubles and the closest this society has been to civil war.

In this opinion article, the former Labour MP Kate Hoey expresses concern at the influence of Sue Gray with the current Labour prime minister, reportedly pushing for the Casement GAA stadium.

Finally, Northern Ireland has some wonderful architecture from the 1700s and 1800s, yet modern buildings are almost never of the same standard. Thus I am dismayed to learn that these two listed gate lodges in Banbridge have been flattened.

Enjoy your reading and your Sunday,

Ben
