Dear reader

The Department of Health in Northern Ireland announced on Thursday afternoon that the current estimate of Covid-19 reproduction number in the Province is between 0.5 - 1.0.

The department said the R here continues to "show a high degree of volatility" and be "heavily influenced by small local clusters". It added that the R number is "not the key indicator for policy decisions".

The department released the information after revealing that eight more positive cases of coronavirus have been detected in Northern Ireland. The total number of people who have been infected here is 5,938. Northern Ireland has now gone 17 days without experiencing a single death related to coronavirus.

Northern Ireland's Covid-19 contact-tracing mobile phone app has been launched. It is called Stop Covid NI and is aimed at interrupting the spread of coronavirus by finding those most at risk of catching it

Meanwhile, anyone who tests positive for coronavirus has been given new instructions by the government to isolate for 10 days.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said that the period must increase from the current rule of seven days because of the risk individuals may still be able to spread Covid-19.

Stay safe
