I flew from Belfast to London early on Thursday. There was low cloud the entire journey over Northern Ireland, the Irish Sea, then England down to Luton. It was beautiful from above the blanket of clouds as far as you could see, like something you could walk on, with blue sky above, but I knew that under those heavy clouds it must be gloomy and grey. We are now in the very darkest evenings of the year in Northern Ireland, with Belfast today having its earliest sunset of 3.57pm. By the middle of this week the sunset will already be getting slightly later, because the evenings turn before the solstice, on Saturday coming, and the mornings turn (get brighter) after it. This week in politics there was a very significant vote on the banning puberty blockers in Northern Ireland. Even Sinn Fein and Alliance opposed blockers. There was also a significant vote on the Irish Sea border, with every unionist MLA withholding consent for it. I have been writing about these very dangerous 'gap' junctions on the A1 Belfast-Dublin road for more than 20 years. There is gradual progress towards their elimination but some of the newer sections of dual carriageway should never have been built with them. The rugby star Iain Henderson has been given an honorary degree from Queen's University and the Olympic legend Mary Peters the freedom of London. Enjoy your reading and your Saturday, Ben |
