Anniversaries and weather warnings

The BBC weather app predicted hurricanes for Northern Ireland. In fact we had an ongoing mix of autumnal weather: ghastly and grey and wet last Sunday, glorious and non stop sunny on Thursday. And today is more sunny than damp.

The cruise ship that was stuck here for months stopped in France where its passengers were unable to disembark. But they were happy when it reached Spain. Let's hope the actual Atlantic hurricanes are long gone as the boat moves south.

It was the anniversary of October 7 this week, with events to mark the date in Belfast. I believe that much of the West failed to comprehend what happened the terrible day.

It is the 40th anniversary of the Brighton bomb today. Our owner David Montgomery was in the hotel hours before the blast. Jo Berry wants the bomber to renounce violence. And I fear that Margaret Thatcher's resolve was, for a while perhaps, weakened by the attack.

The fallout over the former Sinn Fein press officer Michael McMonagle goes on.  Watch this moment when a Stormont chair Paula Bradshaw ordered the live link to be cut. And here is our political editor David Thompson  on how SF's finances are now in the spotlight.

There have been some horrendous court cases, such as the conviction of a couple for causing brain damage to a young child. And a man appeared in court in Dublin over the dreadful murder of Mary Ward in Belfast.

Our front page reports on the tragic court case in which a man of 92 has admitted killing a school child by careless driving. Amid a spate of such cases, we ask in our editorial if there should be mandatory re-testing for much older drivers.

And here is an interview with the chef Niall McKenna who says that his new cook book is a love letter to Belfast.

Enjoy your reading and your weekend,

Ben
