It rained persistently some days last week but the weather held up fairly well on the Twelfth. It looks mostly good for Scarva today until late afternoon - I hope that the rain is indeed delayed. It was a fabulous day yesterday, as it always is. Hundreds of thousands of people enjoying the spectacle - here are some pictures. The vast Belfast parade is just marvellous, here is a long video, and tourists who stumble across it love it. Not that you would know this from the way the BBC online led all day on racism in a loyalist area and 11th night hate crime, appalling incidents but a tiny fraction of what was happening across Northern Ireland. But well done GB News stepping in with live coverage that the national broadcaster has abandoned. The BBC led for a while on Hilary Benn condemning some of the bonfires, yet Mr Benn - who as I say in my column is an NI secretary that unionists are lucky to have - also was very warm about the wonderful celebrations in Fermanagh and, again, this warmth simply wasn't reflected in BBC Newsline last night - not even in the second time they quoted him, after they first quoted him condemning the bonfire. Even that latter quote in the programme had him talking about the need for 'respect'. Gavin Robinson is busy! He walked the full eight miles yesterday and is back off to Westminster next week. Here is my column on the astonishing failure of the BBC to mention a key fact of the election, that unionists got most votes. Republicans know well that demoralising unionists could be disastrous for unionism. Our website is crammed with coverage of the festivities and our special edition 32 page Twelfth supplement inside the usual bumper News Letter and Farming Life is in the shops tomorrow as well as today. Enjoy your Saturday and your reading, Ben |
