Good morning,

We are already more than a week into January, and the days are already notably longer ... but wait, I talk about that too much!

So while I have written a brief column on the season, let me steer you instead to my main article today is on why I think Tony Blair should of course get a knighthood, even though I was no fan.

We have a lot of other viewpoints and personal pieces in the 72-page print edition and on our website.

One such article is written by the superbike star Jonathan Rea talks about having an MBE and OBE like Joey Dunlop "makes this all the more incredible".

Or consider this dry but accessible and very important analysis of the recent hooded men judgement by the Supreme Court, which was widely reported as yet another legal kicking for the UK's handling of the Troubles but which the barrister Austen Morgan thinks might in fact put an end to anti UK state legal actions.

In news, the front page/top of website story today is a tragic one, about the tragic death of a teenage girl - the much loved Gracie Leigh Gordon - in a river

The News Letter editorial asks why care and NHS staff are not required to have jabs when people have to show proof of such to get into premises that serve alcohol

The outrage over the tweet sent to Diane Dodds about her dead son continues today, but we also report a free speech activist saying that such "vile' trolling" should not automatically spell an end to web anonymity.

Meanwhile our Weekend interview is with the UFU president Victor Chestnutt, who talks about everything from the Bible to the Protocol:

I explain  here why our cover price has increased for the published newspaper, and how you can save 20% on that cost. Also information for people who might prefer a digital subscription on how to get that if they do not already have it

And further reason to subscribe here. We have just appointed Henry McDonald as political editor and Rod McMurray as deputy editor. A real investment in the future of the title.

Thank you for your continued interest in The News Letter.

If we can interest you, there's huge value in a subscription to The News Letter, through which you can secure unfettered access to our news, sport, opinion and lifestyle journalism, all produced for you here by our team across Northern Ireland.

We hope you have a good start to 2022.
