Good evening,

Tomorrow will be the last day of school for the forseable future for many local children after it was announced yesterday that schools will close to most pupils due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Children of 'key workers' will still be able to attend school after tomorrow but most will have to stay at home until further notice.

This is a very difficult time for everyone and the team at the News Letter continue to work hard to bring you the latest on this unfolding situation.

Here is summary of some of today's key developments:

  • Health Minister, Robin Swann, today said as many as 9,000 people could die in Northern Ireland from the pandemic. Minister Swann made the comments in a press conference at Stomont this evening.
  • A patient who tested postive for COVID-19 has sadly died in hospital in Northern Ireland, the Department of Health has said. In a statement they said: "The patient was elderly, had an underlying medical condition, and was being treated in a hospital in the greater Belfast area."
  • Boris Johnson held his daily press briefing this evening. He said 'we can turn the tide within the next 12 weeks' in the battle against the virus.
  • Mr Johnson also promised to massively increase testing for COVID-19.
