Ken Reid and Irish election

We are not yet in December but there have been plenty of fabulous Christmas style crisp, often sunny, days, with Belfast bustling. Also some atmospheric fog.

The darkness makes it less then ideal time for an election but Boris Johnson held a successful one in December five years ago, and counting is under way in the Irish election today.

If that exit poll is correct then Sinn Fein has avoided the very bad result of the European and council elections but is down a shade on four years ago, as are Fianna Fail and Fine Gael. We will update our website with more.

So-called assisted dying has passed its first hurdle at Westminster but I do agree with critics that it is assisted suicide. A former health minister  thinks it will come to Northern Ireland soon enough, and another former Stormont MLA is troubled by how euthanasia has expanded overseas.

Kemi Badenoch is rightly annoyed that the Labour government is not challenging the grant to Kneecap but this does show that the Tory leader is unaware how culturally, politically and legally republican terror is being retrospectively legitimised.

On Thursday I was at Ken Reid's funeral in Ballymena. I was struck to learn that this one time hardcore newspaper man was initially a nervous broadcaster. Here is in full the excellent tribute that the fellow broadcaster Mark Simpson gave.

Finally, last week I made passing reference to the fact that even under Labour's tax plan farmers can pass a farm worth £3 million free of tax. Here is some more information on how.

Enjoy your reading and your weekend,

Ben
